Popular Sporting Events Affected by Coronavirus Worldwide


The Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has impacted sporting events globally with a number of events postponed, cancelled or being carried out behind closed doors without spectators. Below is the list of worldwide sporting events that are affected by coronavirus:

Tokyo Olympics 2020

Tokyo Olympic games have been postponed till next year after a conference call between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach.

“In the present circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO today, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community”, said a statement released from IOC and Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee after the conference call.

  • Pakistan Cricket Board suspended the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 5 and will probably announce new dates after ICC’s decision on Twenty20 World Cup.
  • All upcoming international series have been postponed.
  • ICC will announce the fate of Twenty20 World Cup to be held in Australia, on March 29, 2020.


All professional tennis tournaments have been suspended till June 07, 2020.

“The professional tennis season is now suspended through June 7, 2020, including the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF World Tennis Tour. At this time, tournaments taking place from June 8, 2020 onwards are still planning to go ahead as per the published schedule”, said a statement from WTA website.


Eight Formula 1 Grand Prix races have been impacted due to ongoing coronavirus outbreak. Monaco Grand Prix and Australian Grand Prix were outright canceled while races in Bahrain, Vietnam, China, Netherlands and Spain were postponed. Azerbaijan has now joined the list where the race that was to be held between June 5-7 in Baku, has been postponed.

“Baku City Circuit (BCC) has today taken the decision to postpone the FORMULA 1 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX 2020 due to take place on June 5th – 7th”, said statement from Formula 1.


  • World Athletics Indoor Championships has been postponed till next year.
  • London Marathon, which was supposed to be held on April 26, has been now been postponed till October 4. Similarly the Amsterdam, Boston, Paris and Barcelona Marathons have also been postponed.


National Basketball Association has suspended the season until further notice after Utah Jazz player, Rudy Gobert, tested positive for coronavirus.
