The skipper of the Spanish La Liga side Espanyol, Daniel Jarque has died due to heart attack during the team’s pre-season tour of Italy. He was just 26.

Jarque played his whole career at Espanyol. He was recently promoted to the ranks of captain. The Catalonian made his debut in 2002 against Recreativo Huelva.

The 26-year-old recently played in the 3-0 victory over Liverpool in the pre-season friendly. His sudden death has not only shocked his colleagues but also football fans all over the world.

“It has been a very big shock,” said Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta who was also his close friend.

“I will miss you, my friend.”

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has also send his condolences to Jarque’s teammates at Espanyol.

“It is a sad day for us and football,” said Puyol.

“We send our support to his family and colleagues. I have spoken to some, like Ivan (De la Pena), and they are very upset,” he added.

“We will support his family and colleagues. It has been a very tough shock.”

Jarque played for Spain Under 17, Under 19, Under 20 and Under 21 teams. Though he represented Spain on junior levels, he never made it to the national side but due his brilliant performances in the last two seasons he was a powerful contender to play in the national colors.

We all condole from the bottom of our hearts to Espanyol and to Jarque’s family.
